Aug 31, 2017 Augmented Reality: A Step Closer to a Business Reality
You may soon be able to launch viable augmented reality apps that will run on more than 100 million devices.
Google is about to release a new augmented reality (AR) software development kit. Dubbed ARCore, the kit will help software engineers build augmented reality apps for a wide range of devices, that run Nougat or later. From a business perspective, this means a sizable target audience—on potentially millions of phones and tablets—will be able to experience your app.
Experimenting with a preview version has led to some observations:
- This is not delivering the deep, sophisticated AR experience such as the kind that requires specialized equipment. Rather, Google is trading off greater immersion for compatibility with ubiquitous hardware. That said, in the opinion of our specialists, within the confines of the hardware, the AR experience is nonetheless strong.
- The kit supports a great deal of control over the placement of objects, as well as realistic light and shadows. It supports motion tracking, environmental understanding, and light estimation matrix. This mix helps apps created with the kit work even in low light conditions.
- Google is also trying to make it easy to build using ARCore—it is compatible with Java/OpenGL, Unity, and Unreal.
So, what does this mean for your mobile/Web strategy?
AR has held promise for some years in delivering richer, more immersive user experiences. A barrier has been the need of specialized hardware. With this advance—and other advances are being made both by Google and by Apple—the world is getting closer to reducing or eliminating these barriers.
For site walkthroughs, product demos, training, data visualization, and more, uses an AR app could give your business an edge. You may also have an opportunity to win attention and excitement among your customers by being first to market with an AR app.
Many considerations will determine whether an AR app is likely to provide ROI for your particular business—and if it is, how to craft the app to deliver maximum value. Contact us at 212-447-1100 or email@example.com to arrange to speak with a specialist.
