Oracle

Oracle is the most well known commercial database server. Many large companies choose Oracle for its reliability and scalability.

Advantages

  • Great power: Oracle can reliably handle enormous databases and high demands. It can run on all sorts of very powerful hardware, and permits very intensive database requests to be executed without interfering with other processes.
  • Security: Recent versions of Oracle offer a security feature that prevents even the database administrators from accessing confidential information.

Disadvantages

  • Expense and complexity: Oracle can be extremely expensive, and its complexity is such that substantial Oracle experience is necessary to avoid problems.

Choosing Oracle

Making the investment in Oracle is worth it if you have an extremely large database with great demands being placed on it. Situations requiring extreme security also benefit from Oracle.

While MySQL is not quite Oracle’s equal in these respects, it’s powerful and secure enough for many sensitive applications.
